This quaint domestic scene brings in mind the homegrown charm of Bengal School paintings. The mother-figure and the daughter-figure are in a tete-a-tete in the cool ochre interiors of the kitchen storage harking back to a less-troubled quieter time. But even though the color palette is very Bengal School earthen with just a hint of green in the pumpkin the technique is not washed and the figures are modeled for the illusion of the third dimension with careful shading making them almost float up from the flattened background. The lighting is also fictive and full of imagination and charm without following the strict rules of chiaroscuro (light-dark).
