This ink and brush drawing showing a Vaishnav man beating a drum is artfully distorted like the famed anamorphic skull in Holbeins painting. This distortion almost makes us hear the frenzy of the percussion and the figure seen through that veil of sound. The thin brushstrokes in the cotton wrapper of the man and on the face of the drum fortify the illusions of vibration while the hard-set impassive face of the man refuses any emotional readings. In contrast the thick brushstrokes that make up the outline of the drawing seem done with so much ease but an experienced eye would know that this virtuosity takes years of practice and hundreds of drawings in order to arrive at.
